After School Arts
The East Side Arts Council partners with St. Paul's east side community elementary schools and recreation centers to provide engaging After School Enrichment in the Arts. Experienced teaching artists create rich learning environments allowing children to explore artistic interest in a variety of creative and imaginative ways. The after-school hours are a rich and vital time for providing challenging and exciting artistic experiences that compliment regular classroom instruction.

2007- 2008 In-School Residencies
This year ESAC will bring 22 professional artists into the classrooms of partner schools: Academia Cesar Chavez School, Bruce F. Vento Elementary, Dayton's Bluff Achievement Plus Elementary, Farnsworth Aerospace Elementary School, Highwood Hills Elementary, John A. Johnson Elementary and Phalen Lake Elementary to develop arts programming that built on the schools strengths and supported its needs. The projects at each school take on a unique shape based on the focus of the school and the make-up of the student population.

Gathering at the River
Gathering at the River - Crepuscule 2007 was an interactive family-oriented event which brought diverse communities together at the Mississippi River to celebrate our care, concern, and connections to the river, our greatest resource, through the arts.
October 2007 marked the maiden voyage of this event in the city of Saint Paul, but a ten-year tradition for musician, composer, and instrument maker, Douglas R. Ewart, who is the founder of Crepuscule, a Latin term meaning "happening at twilight" or in this case, the twilight of the seasons-Fall.
The three-hour event began with an opening pageant led by Douglas R. Ewart and is designed to honor community elders, youth, families, and all living things. As the event unfolded, individuals were encouraged to explore their own artistry through art-making activities that build on the river theme using recycled materials and/or become part of interactive performances with dance, drama, or music groups participating in the event. At the conclusion of the Gathering at the River - Crepuscule 2007, all in attendance performed in a closing ceremony in which individuals showcased their artwork or performance piece and joined hands in a circle of community.

Artmobile 2007
Artmobile provided free high quality art classes to children of all economic backgrounds. The drop-in nature of the program allowed kids with all attention spans to participate. In the 2007 Artmobile program 622 children worked with eight professional artists. Lead artist and East Sider Rose Marie Felsheim; Artmobile interns Chitra Vairavan and Leah Kapernick; junior high summer interns from the East Side YMCA’s Y-Start program, Jerome, Sifa, Gregory; Americorps Vista member, Robyn; community volunteer, Anne; the coordinators at each individual recreation center; parents, caregivers and other community members all engaged in this educational process.
Artmobile artists and weekly activities included:
Silvia Pontaza- Acting out a Panama story of Conejito (little bunny)
Shakun Maheshwari – India’s Festival of Holi Painting
Mem Lloyd- Clay sculpture
See Xiong- Traditional style Hmong hats and other items using cultural symbols
Francis Kofi- African drumming, music and dancing
Roy McBride- Exploring poetry with collage, musical instruments and voice
Jenea Rewertz-Targui- Bookmaking (community event)
