Gathering at the River
Gathering at the River - Crepuscule 2007 was an interactive family-oriented event which brought diverse communities together at the Mississippi River to celebrate our care, concern, and connections to the river, our greatest resource, through the arts.
October 2007 marked the maiden voyage of this event in the city of Saint Paul, but a ten-year tradition for musician, composer, and instrument maker, Douglas R. Ewart, who is the founder of Crepuscule, a Latin term meaning "happening at twilight" or in this case, the twilight of the seasons-Fall.
The three-hour event began with an opening pageant led by Douglas R. Ewart and is designed to honor community elders, youth, families, and all living things. As the event unfolded, individuals were encouraged to explore their own artistry through art-making activities that build on the river theme using recycled materials and/or become part of interactive performances with dance, drama, or music groups participating in the event. At the conclusion of the Gathering at the River - Crepuscule 2007, all in attendance performed in a closing ceremony in which individuals showcased their artwork or performance piece and joined hands in a circle of community.
