~ 2009-2010 School Residencies ~
ESAC partnered with theater group Teatro del Pueblo bringing theater residencies and performances to Highwood Hills. The focus of the work was Language Arts studies and  literacy.

Phalen Lake Elementary residencies included:
Kindergarten welcomed back jazz musicians, Ruth Mackenzie and Joan Griffith to develop a short musical performance that was showcased for the school and the community. Students discovered the history of Jazz through field songs, spiritualism call and response, scat, rap and jam to compose an original blues song that reflected American patriotism. Ruth and Joan led students in vocal and instrumental improvisation while students used bells, percussion, bass and voice. This residency linked to the kindergarten study of rhythm.

First grade students worked with Heart if the Beast artist again this year exploring folklore. Each class brought their stories to life by creating puppets and performing for their fellow classmates.

Students in the sixth grade brought to life their Core Knowledge History and Geography topic Immigration through dance with dance educator Christopher Yaeger. The Charleston and other 1920's dances helped the student connect with the history they were studying in class.

Highwood Hills Elementary:

Malia Burkhart, a visual artist and puppeteer returned to work two weeks with Highwood in May. Together they developed puppets and masks, culminating in a performance for the entire school. The arts were in-fused with social studies and literature.
